Wow, I cannot believe it’s October already! What a great year, I have met so many wonderful people and have enjoyed working in their beautiful gardens. Hope everybody is enjoying the last of the season’s blooms.
I have some amazing dahlias blooming right now. Here is one of my favorites. More to come….Enjoy your fall!
Don’t forget to plant some spring blooming bulbs.
Article in Durango Herald on The Durango Botanical Society’s Garden Tour will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Looks like fun! Great chance to see what other Durango gardeners are growing in their gardens.
The gardens are looking lush after all the rain we had in May and part of June. The temperatures are starting to soar and I believe the roses are enjoying it, many buds are swelling and ready to bloom. The Itoh peony is gorgeous this year and so are the iris. Next week the herbaceous peonies, roses and clematis will all be blooming at the same time. I will take many photos to put up when I have a few minutes to spare.
Speaking of blooms, a few of my clients have asked me recently for suggestions for plants to use in their gardens to fill in the times their gardens are not blooming. Some gardens have lots of spring and early summer blooms but lack flowers that bloom into the fall months or the other way around. I have a plant list I made a few years ago. I like to print it out and give it to my clients so they can bring it to the nurseries when they go plant shopping.
Sometimes it gets a little overwhelming and having a list will keep you focused on specific plants you are looking for. It’s always tempting to buy plants that are blooming in the nursery but it may not be the bloom time you are looking for. Stay focused, don’t be afraid to ask someone at the nursery, they will be able to find the plants you are looking for or an alternative.

With cooler temperatures and slightly higher elevation, our flower gardens here in Forest Lakes are behind Durango by a few weeks. It always amazes me when I am working on flower gardens in Durango, just 20 miles away, how further along the growing season is. I love it, it extends the season a bit for me to enjoy all the gorgeous blooms. I photographed a bouquet I picked today, click here if you would like to see it bouquet#2

Hope everybody had the opportunity to get out and enjoy Earth Day. I got to spend the day with two of my favorite people.
Tam, Liv and I spent the day amending the soil in their raised beds and planted some cool weather veggies to get things started. What a great day!

It’s almost February and we are over the hump of winter. Just about this time gardeners start chomping at the bit to get back into their gardens. For some of us it’s going to be about 8 more weeks of winter. So for now you might want to brush away those cobwebs and get some new ideas with some great books and apps.
Get inspired and ready for Spring!
Planting: A New Perspective by Piet Oudolf and Noel Kingsbury – I love this book! I bought this one for an early, early Christmas gift because I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it.
Check out the resource page for more great books.
I downloaded a few apps for my iPad that I have been really enjoying recently. Please add to the list if you found an app you like, I’m sure I only scratched the surface of horticulture apps!!
A Garden Life
The English Gardener
I am still searching for a good professional landscape/garden design app that I like. If anyone has found one, please share!
If you already have been devouring gardening information all winter long and need a break, feed the birds and read up on them with this great bird guide app Peterson Field Guide .
